Crowning Frets...
A modified fine toothed triangle file is used to reshape the crown of the frets.
The Crowning File...
Corners are rounded and smoothed.
Shaping the Frets...
This step should take the greatest amount of time. Good lighting is recommended. File with light strokes equally on both sides of the fret approaching the center being careful not to file the top. After filing, 400 and 600 grit sandpaper is wrapped onto the file to remove file scratches.
Steel Wooling Frets...
Frets are steel wooled (0000) in the direction shown. This is the first time fret tops are worked individually in this direction, so count your even pressured strokes to ensure even fret heights.
Hand Buffing the Frets...
A black rubbing compound is used to polish the frets with even pressured counted stokes in the direction as shown. Do not let the rubbing compound rest on a guitar finish. It is petroleum-based and if left unattended for an extended time will leave blemishes.
Oiling the Fingerboard...
Next, with the tape & cardboard removed, the fingerboard is rubbed with boiled linseed oil on a cheesecloth. This will remove the compounds and any playing grime on the fingerboard. Also, this will moisten the fingerboard to prevent cracking. Follow with plain cheesecloth to remove remaining linseed oil.
Polishing the Guitar...
Guitar is wiped with cheesecloth & guitar polish to remove any remaining compound or linseed oil from finish.
Restring the Guitar...
